In 2023, Jeff was lead trial attorney on one of the largest wrongful death verdicts in Georgia, obtaining a $140 million verdict in DeKalb State Court. The case was defended by several of Atlanta’s largest defense firms. Read more about the Hughes verdict. The verdict drew national attention and led to significant changes at the complex where George Hughes died, along with increased code enforcement there and at other complexes in the Atlanta area.
From the moment he decided to become a lawyer, Jeff knew he wanted to try cases to juries, and he made every professional decision with that goal in mind, seeking out opportunities to work for trial lawyers and to get into the courtroom. Before law school, he apprenticed under respected trial lawyers, helping prepare cases for trial and learning how to represent plaintiffs in the trenches. During law school, he continued to learn his trade, trying cases and prosecuting criminal cases in Newton and Jackson Counties.
After law school, Jeff began his career at a boutique defense litigation firm, defending doctors, hospitals, nursing homes, and auto manufacturers at trial. There, he learned how to try cases before juries and what motivates insurance companies to offer fair compensation.
IIn 2007, a plaintiff’s firm recruited Jeff, where he spent several years building serious injury and wrongful death cases. In 2011, he and his UGA Law classmate Alan Hamilton, also a plaintiff’s lawyer, started their own firm with two HP computers and a small line of credit. They chose not to rely on mass marketing or billboards and built the firm on referrals and trial results. Within five years, they had won verdicts of $29.25 million, $27 million, and $20 million. Scott Campbell joined in 2013, and the firm became Shiver Hamilton Campbell in 2022. Today, the firm’s approach is unchanged: take serious cases, prepare them for trial, and let the results speak.
Jeff’s early work drew statewide notice. In 2011, the Daily Report selected him as one of 13 lawyers under 40 “On the Rise.” Jeff has been named a Super Lawyer by Atlanta Magazine and Super Lawyers 2014-2027, a Super Lawyers Rising Star 2007, 2009-2013, and one of Georgia’s Top 100 Super Lawyers 2018-2027,
Jeff’s practice includes automobile accidents, trucking accidents, motorcycle accidents, catastrophic injuries, wrongful death, product liability, and professional malpractice. He has tried numerous cases to verdict and has represented clients in the Supreme Court of Georgia, the Georgia Court of Appeals, and Georgia federal courts.
Jeff is married with three children. He volunteers with Blue Skies Ministries and Hope Heals, serves as an Elder at Saint Simons Island Presbyterian Church, and chairs the Frederica Academy Board of Trustees. He is a former board member of the Golden Isles Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
