$1,650,000 Settlement – Apartment Complex Shooting

SHIVER Hamilton Campbell represented the husband of a young lady who was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Southwest Atlanta. A friend of the victim was arriving for a visit when several armed robbers outside of the victim’s apartment door approached her. When the victim heard the commotion outside, she opened her door to investigate, and the robbers turned their guns on her and shot her several times in the abdomen. Tragically, our client died in front of her husband and six-year-old daughter.

The insurance company initially denied the claim saying that this was a targeted attack and that our clients were conducting illegal activity in their apartment. The insurance company also claimed that it had security at the complex and that nothing could have been done to deter this crime.

Shiver Hamilton Campbell filed suit was able to learn that the security company was not on duty the day of the shooting. During the discovery process, we obtained emails from the security company to the management company showing that the management company quit paying the security company a few days before the shooting. We also obtained bank statements from the management company and were able to prove that the management company wrote itself a large check instead of paying the security company.
